Texas football: Steve Sarkisian gives brutally honest assessment on state of the program
By John Buhler
It is very early in Steve Sarkisian’s Texas football coaching career, but he already has a brutally honest take on the state of the Longhorns program.
Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian tells didn’t hold back when it comes to his program’s current place in the college football hierarchy.
Sarkisian was hired away from the Alabama Crimson Tide to be the one to bring Texas back. Texas lost its way under Mack Brown and absolutely did not come back whatsoever under Charlie Strong or Tom Herman. With 2021 being Sarkisian’s first year in Austin, he has a brutally honest assessment of where the Longhorns program is at. It has a long way to go, but they can get there.
This is what Steve Sarkisian meant by “all gas, no brakes” with Texas football
Texas is one of the most celebrated programs in college football history. However, it has been over a decade since the Longhorns last won a Big 12 crown. Their Power 5 conference firmly belongs to arch-rival Oklahoma. But before the Longhorns can go about beating the Sooners on a regular basis and contend for College Football Playoff berths, they must first eradicate the entitlement.
This has long been an issue with the Texas program. Despite having outstanding facilities in Austin, the players just want it more up in Norman. We know that Sarkisian is a great offensive mind and had some degree of success with his two previous head coaching posts at Washington and USC. However, he too must be all about the work when it comes to turning Texas around.
Sarkisian will not fix Texas overnight, but his arrival in Austin has truly been a breath of fresh air.
