Cowboys: 1 player who could be cut before the NFL Draft
With the NFL Draft right around the corner, the Cowboys could still part ways with guys on the roster to create cap space.
Come April 29, NFL fans across the globe will be ready for the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft to arrive. It really is the best part of the year for countless folks out there. Teams of course are going to be busy. This includes the Dallas Cowboys, who are hoping to bounce back after going 6-10 last season.
With that said, we could see some movement within the roster to create cap space, which the front office would then address in the draft. One guy in particular who could end up getting cut? Safety Darian Thompson.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Dallas Cowboys released safety Darian Thompson
If the Cowboys were to release Thompson, they’d save right around $1.2 million for next season as he has a dead cap hit of only $100,000, while his cap number is $1.29 million. Thompson, a 6-foot-2, 210-pounder, appeared in 15 games last season and made seven starts. He finished the year with 43 tackles and one interception.
With that said, Thompson really wasn’t a reliable defensive back for Dallas last season and there were several times where he gave up some big plays. It was frustrating to see for Cowboys fans who had high hopes for the fifth-year veteran.
Prior to 2020, Dallas signed Thompson to a new two-year contract. He started out his career in 2016 with the Giants, spending two seasons in East Rutherford. He then arrived to Dallas in 2018 and has appeared in 40 games since.
Thompson is hoping to make a splash for the team next season, but if Jerry Jones believes it’s important to save some money and he can be replaced in the NFL Draft, Thompson may need to look for a new home sometime soon.
