The Seattle Seahawks made some moves in free agency and Russell Wilson approves.

In most circumstances, a quarterback approving of his team adding to the locker room in free agency wouldn’t be a major storyline. Yet, this is Russell Wilson and the Seattle Seahawks, so there’s a fairly important backstory.

Wilson and the Hawks were headed for a divorce as recently as last week. Wilson had the Chicago Bears on his list of acceptable teams he’d accept a trade to, as well as others. The Bears moved on with another option, and perhaps Wilson is doing the same for 2021.

On Tuesday, the Seahawks announced they brought back defensive end Benson Mayowa and signed former 49ers pass-rusher Kerry Hyder, Jr. Wilson responded by cheering on the Seahawks moves — a good sign that he doesn’t see himself going anywhere in 2021.

Does this mean all is solved between the Seahawks and Russell Wilson?

To put it simply, no. If a player has one foot out the door, especially a player the caliber of Russell Wilson, they typically eventually leave. Wilson is one of only a few elite quarterbacks in the NFL. There’s at least half the league, likely two-thirds, who would consider Wilson an upgrade at the quarterback position.

Yet, Wilson’s contract makes it tough to trade him before the NFL Draft due to all the dead cap they’d be sacrificing. With that in mind, they might as well wait until 2022 and see if this situation solves itself, or if Wilson can up his production enough to increase his value.

The additions of Hyder and Mayowa are helping matters in the interim.
