Marlon Mack is jacked up to add Carson Wentz to the Colts in 2021

Running back Marlon Mack is returning to the Indianapolis Colts in 2021 and he’s excited to play alongside his new quarterback.

The Indianapolis Colts have had a revolving door of sorts at the quarterback position. Andrew Luck, their former 2012 first-overall selection, shockingly announced his retirement prior to the start of the 2019 season. The team entrusted Jacoby Brissett to start under center that campaign, but opted to sign former Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers last offseason. Following the team’s AFC Wild Card Round loss to the Buffalo Bills, Rivers announced his retirement from the NFL.

Entering 2021, the Colts will now have Carson Wentz starting at quarterback following their trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. But what do Wentz’s new teammates think of the acquisition?

When speaking with FanSided’s Matt Verderame and Mark Carman on the latest episode of the “Stacking the Box Podcast,” newly re-signed running back Marlon Mack says he can’t wait to play alongside Wentz this upcoming season.

“I think he’s a great quarterback,” said Mack. “He’s in the league for a reason. First-round pick for a reason. I feel like he’s going to come here and do great things for us. We just have to keep working hard and put our heads down and work.”

Back in 2019, the Eagles signed Wentz to a four-year, $128 million contract extension to ensure that he was the starter for the foreseeable future. But after a brutal individual campaign and a soured relationship with the organization, Wentz and the Eagles decided that it was best for both parties to move on.

The most logical destination was always the Colts, because of head coach Frank Reich. Sure enough, the Colts acquired him in exchange for a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 second-round selection.

Once Wentz was drafted second-overall in 2016, Reich was his offensive coordinator. After his rookie season, Wentz played like the runaway MVP favorite until he suffered a season-ending knee injury during that infamous game against the Los Angeles Rams. Through 13 games that year, Wentz completed 60.2-percent of his passes for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions. After Reich departed Philadelphia to take the Colts’ vacant head coaching job, Wentz never played at that same level. Three years later, the two are finally reunited.

Wentz has a lot working for him in Indianapolis besides Reich’s scheme on offense. He has a premier offensive line to stand behind, a stellar wide receiving corps to throw to and a running back group to lean upon in Mack, Jonathan Taylor and Nyheim Hines. Wentz did not have those luxuries last season with the Eagles, and could stand to have a career revival in 2021 with the Colts.
