Defensive coordinator Dan Lanning makes Georgia football players earn it before entering his most sacred meeting room.

To enter the outside linebackers meeting room in Athens, Georgia football players must bring with them a binder, as well as deliver a convincing forearm shiver to defensive coordinator Dan Lanning.

The Georgia Bulldogs are in the middle of spring practice. Lanning could not be more fired up about it. Georgia’s star defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach was seen holding a padded shield as he greeted players entering his meeting room. Bursting with energy, defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae could not help but capture Lanning’s viral moment and share it on Twitter.

The Georgia football team could lose Dan Lanning to a Power 5 job in 2021

While Georgia avoided losing one of its assistant coaches to a Power 5 job in 2021, Lanning will be the third branch of Kirby Smart’s coaching tree. Former defensive coordinator Mel Tucker left for the Colorado Buffaloes in 2019. He is now in his second year leading the Michigan State Spartans. Former offensive line coach Sam Pittman is in his second season with the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Lanning was rumored to become the next defensive coordinator of the Texas Longhorns, but opted to stay put in Athens for another season. Should the Dawgs be as menacing defensively as they have been the last few years, Lanning will be one of the hottest names on the coaching carousel. For now, he is making sure his players bring it every day in practice, and in every meeting.

While bringing a padded shield inside is campy, it looks to be effective for Lanning and the Dawgs.
