Mets owner Steve Cohen and superstar shortstop Francisco Lindor had dinner over the weekend as the two sides try to come to an agreement on a new contract.

The New York Mets made the blockbuster move to acquire Francisco Lindor. The next step was signing the superstar shortstop to a long-term extension.

Lindor has set Opening Day as the deadline for his contract talks this year and a recent report should have fans excited. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Lindor and team owner Steve Cohen had dinner this weekend as the two sides look to come to an agreement on a major contract extension.

Lindor is going to want a deal worth over $300 million. Cohen’s job will be to figure out a way to do that and spread out the cost in a way that is good for business.  However, he is wealthy enough to where the Mets can pay Lindor and still land other top talent without much of an issue. That is also part of the commitment he made when taking over the team.

The star shortstop is 27 years old and will begin next season as a 28-year-old in the prime of his career. So while Fernando Tatis Jr’s 14-year deal set a new bar, Lindor is too old for something like that. The $340 million annual value could still be possible.

There are plenty of layers to this contract talk and Cohen added a fun one by responding to someone asking him how the dinner was.

So we know the dinner did in fact happen and Cohen did not like the meal. Mets fans will be hoping the conversation itself went much better.
