The New York Mets are bringing back their black jerseys in 2021 to the delight of fans who associate the alternates with great days for the team.

The 2021 MLB season is fast approaching, so the New York Mets made a big announcement to get their fans pumped for the new year.

No, it wasn’t a new Francisco Lindor contract. Fans will have to bite their nails over that saga a bit longer. Instead, it was the return of a popular uniform option.

The Mets made it official on Monday, announcing the plan to have a limited number of alternate black jersey games this summer.

Fans on Twitter were mostly excited, especially at the prospect of getting a black Lindor jersey if the team can get a deal done.

Mets players were also hyped about it.

The Mets made good memories in the black jerseys

There’s good reason for nostalgia over the old alternates, which featured a script ‘Mets’ or ‘New York’ across the chest. They debuted in 1998 and were still a beloved feature in 2000 when the Mets went to the World Series.

Mets fans will be hoping the return of the black threads will bring some good luck.

When they last wore them in 2012, Jon Niese had 10 strikeouts in six scoreless innings, Kirk Nieuwenhuis went 3-for-5 with a home run, Andres Torres hit a double and a triple, per Jacob Resnick. The Mets beat the Cardinals 6-1 that night at Citi Field.

With the black jerseys no longer featuring that year, the Mets lost six of their next seven games, including two walk-off defeats. Coincidence?

The new season will begin on Apr. 1 with a road series against the Washington Nationals. The goal will be to improve on last year’s fourth-place finish in the NL East. And to do it in style.
