Did Dennis Schroder really turn down an $84 million extension from the Lakers?

Los Angeles Lakers fans out there want to know if point guard Dennis Schroder actually turned down an $84 million offer from the team. 

In the middle of his first season with the Los Angeles Lakers, point guard Dennis Schroder continues to win over plenty of hearts in The City of Angels. With his strong play for the defending NBA Finals champs, it’s easy to understand why.

Schroder is averaging 15.4 points and 4.9 assists per contest. With him playing so well, the Lakers look primed to compete for another title. With that being said, does Schroder think his strong play will lead to a monster deal this offseason?

Per ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, LA put an $84 million offer on the table, which the guard rejected. The New York Times’ Marc Stein also confirmed a four-year, $80 million deal was on the table, which Schroder’s camp turned down.

“What I have been told, and this rumor is pretty widely out there so I doubt this is very surprising, is it the Lakers did indeed offer him that $84 million over four years,” Windhorst recently said on a podcast. “Now this is where we get into gray area: Was it fully guaranteed? Was it partially guaranteed? Were there incentives?”

Per Windhorst, Schroder believes that he’ll be able to land a monster deal this offseason in free agency. Will he end up doing so as an NBA champion? The Lakers are indeed focused on repeating as champs, though they’ve been dealt some adversity to battle with LeBron James suffering his ankle injury that will sideline him for the next 2-4 weeks.

As for Schroder, he’s ready to do whatever it takes to help this team get the job done this spring. Come this offseason, we’ll see how much he’s able to land in his checking account if he indeed does enter free agency.
