As the NFL tries to get back to some sense of normalcy next season, Roger Goodell has announced that stadiums could be at full capacity.

Last season was unlike anything we’ve ever seen in the sports world, but COVID-19 seemed like it had a unique effect on the NFL.

It makes sense given that the NFL has larger teams and is harder to quarantine or replicate the ‘bubble’ experience that all other leagues seemingly were able to pull off much better. Still, players, coaches, and fans alike made it through the grueling season and now hope to get back into the swing of these this year.

The league allowed about 22,000 on hand at Raymond James Stadium for Super Bowl LV. The stadium has the capacity to seat over 65,000 fans but the NFL’s league-wide in-person attendance health and safety guidelines were strictly enforced.

Now Roger Goodell seems to be optimistic fans will be selling out stadiums this season, as relayed by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Roger Goodell anticipated full-capacity stadiums in 2021

Goodell announced Tuesday the league expects to have full stadiums during the 2021 season.

This is a stark contradiction to the way the season ended with some teams going the full year without any fans in the stadium. Just five months away from kickoff, it seems the league’s timeline has been expedited.

This is a bit odd given the fact that vaccines are still not widely available to most Americans. Still, it does say a lot about the direction that the league and the country expect to be headed in the coming months.

It’s unclear right now as to whether we should be so optimistic about returning to our favorite stadiums, but if everyone can get vaccinated in time, this NFL season is sure to be one to remember coming off of the year we’ve had.
