San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. pulled out his best Neo impression to avoid a tag at first base during Thursday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The San Diego Padres went further than most expected last season due to the impressive play of stud shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. With Opening Day on Thursday, many baseball fans wondered how Tatis would make the highlight reel. Spoiler alert: It was on the base path.
During San Diego’s home opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Tatis was close to being picked off at first base by Christian Walker. That was when he pulled out a move directly out of the film “The Matrix” to avoid the tag and return safely to first.

So far, so good for one of the faces of professional baseball.
Tatis is coming off a 2019 campaign where he slashed .277/.366/.571 while recording 17 home runs, 45 RBI, 50 runs scored and 62 hits through 59 games. The Padres rewarded Tatis with a massive 14-year, $340 million contract this offseason to make him the highest paid shortstop in MLB history. That honor would only last a couple of months, as the New York Mets signed Francisco Lindor to a 10-year, $341 million deal on Wednesday evening.
In Game 1 of 162, Tatis is already dropping jaws with his play on the field.
