Astros: 1 thing we learned from Opening Day win over A’s

The Houston Astros played in a hostile environment Thursday night during the season-opening win over the A’s. 

The Houston Astros got a free pass in 2020. The cheating scandal was revealed and fans were ready to tear into the team all season long. Then COVID hit and fans were not allowed in the stands all year.

Fans are now back, in a limited capacity, and Thursday night’s game in Oakland showed the Astros are going to hear plenty of boos and other aggressive things throughout the 2021 season. Fans around the league have waited a whole year for this.

Astros win in the tough environment

There were signs, trash cans being banged on, and plenty of boos. Fans even cheered when Carlos Correa got drilled by a pitch.

Fans in Oakland remain unhappy with their division rival and have been waiting a full year to let out their true feelings. This should only be a preview of what is to come every single time Houston is on the road this season. The boos should only get louder once more fans get into the stands all around MLB.

The game itself was a great one for the Astros. They won 8-1 and had six different players record hits on the night. Zack Greinke went six scoreless innings as well, sitting in the role of “ace” for this staff in 2021.

The Astros cheated and the players essentially faced zero punishment other than minor public shame. And even that was put on hold for a year because of the shortened 2020 season. Yet fans have not forgotten what happened, and everyone in a Houston uniform will need to have tough skin when playing on the road this season. The boos are only going to get louder.
