Cubs pitching prospect retires to go to enroll in law school

Chicago Cubs pitching prospect Duncan Robinson is heading to law school.

Robinson was one of the better pitching prospects in the Cubs organization as recently as their World Series season in 2016. He reached Triple-A in 2018, pitching to a 3.11 ERA and rising up the ranks heading into the 2017 campaign.

Robinson had to undergo Tommy John surgery in 2019, and hasn’t been the same since. He hasn’t pitched in three years since his arm injury, and doesn’t have much of a future in the Cubs organization.

“I have nothing but the utmost respect for the Chicago Cubs and each and every person I’ve shared a field with,” Robinson wrote in a statement.

Robinson put his future first, realizing that his baseball career was a longshot at this point. Giving up on a lifelong dream is brutal, but it’s something Robinson has done in search of further education.

The Cubs, in the meantime, are hoping to relive some 2016 glory in 2021, with Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Willson Contreras and Kris Bryant leading the way.
