Eagles: Jalen Hurts sends a not-so-subtle message with jersey number change
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has a new number just in case anyone forgot about his new role in 2021.
Jalen Hurts won the quarterback competition in Philly. The Philadelphia Eagles traded Carson Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts and are riding with Hurts in what is the dawn of a new era for the organization.
Hurts was a second-round pick in 2020 and was the second quarterback on the depth chart to start the season. Thus, his No. 2 jersey number was fitting. He now has a new role and decided to change his number to reflect the fact that, in case anyone forgot, he is the new signal-caller in town.
Jalen Hurts upgrades his number with the Eagles in 2021
Hurts is now No. 1 on the depth chart and also No. 1 on the field. He wore the number during his time at Oklahoma and is bringing it back in the NFL.
One interesting bit of information from the Eagles’ tweet, in case fans were unaware, is that Joe Flacco is on the depth chart as well. He signed with the team at the end of March.
But this is Hurts’ team now after limited time on the field in 2020. He did appear in 15 games, but only made four starts as the Eagles finished looking like a total disaster, which ultimately resulted in Doug Pederson losing his job.
Hurts clearly has the confidence to run this team and is getting a chance to prove he is the man in 2021. It would take a truly disastrous performance for Flacco to ever see the field.
Hurts is No. 1 on the field and is looking to be the same in the hearts of Eagles fans this season. The early results were promising and the hype remains. Now he has to actually follow all of it up with a winning season.
