Gonzaga basketball expected to get commitment from No. 1 recruit Chet Holmgren

Gonzaga basketball is expected to land the commitment from No. 1 recruit Chet Holmgren in what could be a very good week for Mark Few’s team.

Chet Holmgren is expected to announce his commitment to the Gonzaga Bulldogs. The nation’s No. 1 recruit would be the biggest and best recruit to commit to Gonzaga basketball in the program’s history.

On the heels of Mark Few’s team getting Jalen Suggs last year, then their top recruit of all time, getting Holmgren is the latest example of this being the Golden Age of Gonzaga basketball.

Holmgren has been a Gonzaga favorite for the last several weeks with Few’s team emerging from a pack of teams that included Michigan, Ohio State and his hometown Minnesota Golden Gophers, but they were never really considered serious players for the unicorn talent.

The 7-foot, 190-pound Minneapolis, Minnesota native starred for Minnehaha Academy where he put on a show each time he stepped on the court. The McDonald’s All-American has often been compared to NBA All-Star Anthony Davis because of his incredible shot-blocking ability and rim protection.

Additionally, Holmgren shares the unique ability to handle the ball and possesses great ball skills that Davis had when he was an elite recruit out of Chicago before heading to Kentucky. Davis, a guard before a significant growth spurt in high school, had point guard skills that helped him as a center.

Holmgren, while incredibly thin and in need of bulking up in the weight room and packing on the muscle and weight, has unreal upside and potential. Being thin hasn’t stopped players like Kevin Durant from being unstoppable players on the court, but Holmgren plays a different game and a different position so he will undoubtedly have to add at least 20-25 pounds over the course of the next eight-12 months to dominate the college game before adding another 20-25 to compete at the NBA level where he could be the No. 1 pick in two years.

With Gonzaga the odds-on favorite to win the national championship this year, adding Holmgren could mean the Zags have a great chance at winning it all next year too.
