Saints reportedly like Kyle Trask as Drew Brees replacement

The New Orleans Saints are reportedly intrigued by Florida quarterback Kyle Trask as a long-term replacement option for Drew Brees.

The New Orleans Saints are going to be without Drew Brees as a starting quarterback for the first time since the 2005 season. Brees has retired — assuringly to start his broadcasting career — and left New Orleans head coach Sean Payton to choose between Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston.

While Winston is the apparent man to beat going into 2021, the Saints reportedly have their eye on a long-term solution in the draft. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, New Orleans likes Florida quarterback Kyle Trask, who is largely seen as a mid-round prospect after his time in the SEC.

Are the Saints going to draft a first-round quarterback?

The Saints, picking 28th overall, aren’t going to get near Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Mac Jones, Trey Lance or Justin Fields without a major trade or divine intervention. Therefore, New Orleans is either looking at taking a sixth quarterback in the first round at or near their spot, or selecting one on the second day.

While this sounds like a shaky plan, we’ve seen this work out in recent years. In 2018, the NFL Draft watched Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Baker Mayfield and Josh Allen all go in the top-10. Then, at No. 32 overall, the Baltimore Ravens selected Lamar Jackson. In ’14, the Minnesota Vikings got Teddy Bridgewater at 32nd, watching Blake Bortles and Jonny Manziel go off the board before him.

Now, let’s all remember that this is lying season. There’s little reason for anybody in the New Orleans front office or coaching staff to start telling people what they would like to walk out of the draft with. Then again, loose lips and all that.
