Twins: Ageless wonder Nelson Cruz nearly hit 2 grand slams in same at-bat (Video)

Nelson Cruz owns the Detroit Tigers, and his dominance continued on Monday afternoon.

Per The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen, Nelson Cruz entered the middle innings of Monday’s game with a career .299 batting average with, 24 home runs, 74 RBI, .374 OBP in 108 games against Detroit. Those numbers went up, obviously, after Cruz hit another bomb in Motown.

However, Cruz’s most memorable at-bat occurred in just the second inning, in which he hit a grand slam off Tigers started Jose Ureña.

Cruz tried to convince the umpires the first ball was fair, stating it glanced off the foul pole, forcing it to go several rows back foul. After video review, that was proven false. However, in the same at-bat, Cruz got his revenge on a line drive to left field which just barely went over the Comerica Park fence. The exit velocity on said home run was striking, at 114.6 MPH.

Cruz has won a silver slugger award four out of the past six seasons, including in 2020. He was a late signing in free agency, as he was waiting to see if the National League would adopt the designated hitter, further expanding his options in the process.

However, with the DH remaining AL-specific for at least this year, a return to the Twins was an obvious move. Cruz would love a repeat of his last full season in Minnesota, in which he hit .311 with 41 home runs and 108 RBI.
