The Champions League quarterfinal begins on Tuesday with Manchester City welcoming Borussia Dortmund to Etihad Stadium. The Citizens easily knocked off Borussia Monchengladbach in the round of 16, winning 4-0 on aggregate. Dortmund advanced after defeated Sevilla 5-4.
City are running away with the Premier League title for the third time in the past four seasons. The Citizens are 14 points ahead of second-place Manchester United. The only thing left for City and manager Pep Guardiola to win is the Champions League. Manchester City have competed in every Champions League since 2011 but have only advanced to the semifinal once. Despite their past failures in the Champions League, City remain one of the favorites to win. The Citizens are a well-balanced team that features seven different players who have scored at least seven goals. Defensively, the addition of Ruben Dias has helped resolve many of the previous defensive flaws the club had in previous seasons.
Borussia Dortmund are having a very disappointing season. The Black and Yellows were expected to compete for the Bundesliga title but are in serious jeopardy of missing out on the top four altogether. With seven games remaining, Dortmund are seven points behind fourth-place Eintracht Frankfurt. Dortmund’s inability to defend has continued to derail them. The worst part for Dortmund, defense is not a new problem. It has been a recurring problem that they have not been able to solve over the past four years. If Dortmund are going to advance to the semifinal, they will need another incredible performance from Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker has been unbelievable this season, scoring 33 goals in 32 games.
