Round 4

S. Indiana. 31. Scouting Report. Jamar Johnson. 116. player. Pick Analysis

Safety doesn’t feel like a great need for the Giants. But a closer look says Jabril Peppers is not an impact player, and Xavier McKinney is a linebacker in a safety’s body that defensive coordinator Patrick Graham can find different ways to use. A defense with just 11 interceptions last year, and only one guy (James Bradberry) registering more than one, needs another impact player in the secondary.

Johnson made starts at cornerback and safety for Indiana, with 67 total tackles, six interceptions, four sacks and eight tackles for loss over his last two seasons. He is considered an ascending player, with scheme and position versatility to fit nicely in the modern NFL. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com has cited Johnson as one of his draft prospect sleepers.

The Giants can go multiple directions with every pick they have this year. Here in the fourth round, they make a bet on talent and give an ascending defense another piece on the back end.
