The New York Rangers will reportedly buy out defenseman Tony DeAngelo’s contract following the 2021 season.

The 2021 NHL trade deadline has come and gone, and the New York Rangers stood pat. But when it comes to controversial defenseman Tony DeAngelo, who has not played for the team since Jan. 30, the team did try to move on.

According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, the Rangers were willing to “mutually terminate” DeAngelo’s contract to allow him to sign on with a team via free agency, but he declined. As a result, the Rangers will officially buy DeAngelo out of his contract at end of the season.

As Dreger says in the above tweet, the Montreal Canadiens were believed to be a team interested in DeAngelo.

DeAngelo has a noted track record of behavior issues throughout his playing career, but after recording 53 points (15 goals, 38 assists) in the 2019-20 season, the Rangers were inclined to sign him to a two-year, $9.6 million contract. The relationship went downhill immediately afterwards.

While DeAngelo did put up a ton of points for a defenseman the year prior, he was still a liability when attempting to stop the opposition. DeAngelo only played in six games this campaign, but it all came to an end after a late-January, overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. After losing 5-4, DeAngelo reportedly got into a physical altercation with goaltender Alexandar Georgiev in the tunnel, resulting in them being separated by their teammates, per The Athletic’s Rick Carpiniello. The Rangers waived DeAngelo 24 hours later, where he went unclaimed.

In his five-year career, DeAngelo has recorded 24 goals, 82 assists and 235 blocked shots in 206 games.

DeAngelo’s stint with the Rangers is over, but it won’t be official until this summer.
