The Twins and Red Sox held a moment of silence before Tuesday’s game to honor the memory of Daunte Wright after the young man was killed by police over the weekend.

The sports world has had a variety of responses to the terrible situation involving the death of Daunte Wright over the weekend. The young African-American man was shot and killed by police in a Minneapolis suburb as this systemic problem continues to appear over and over in our society.

The Minnesota Twins decided to postpone Monday’s game against the Boston Red Sox in response to this tragedy. The two teams were back on the field Tuesday and started the game with a moment of silence in honor of Wright.

There are just no words for this situation anymore. A young man lost his life for no reason and once again there are far more questions than answers. From a sports perspective, athletes are left wondering if there is anything they can do to help.

NBA teams had several tributes Monday night and that should continue throughout the week. Something like a moment of silence does not change much, but it is still a gesture to call attention to a terrible tragedy that never had to happen.

The moments of silence end and the games are played. Unfortunately, there have been far too many of these moments as African-American men and women continue to be killed by police. What may have seemed like a breaking point last summer has not changed at all in 2021.

Our thoughts go out to Wright’s family and all his loved ones. No family should have to deal with something like this.
