In the marquee Champions League match on Wednesday, Liverpool host Real Madrid at Anfield. Real won the first leg 3-1 behind two Vinicius Junior goals. The second leg will determine which club will advance to the semifinal.
Liverpool have had a challenging season. The Reds have been forced to use more than 20 different combinations at center-back. The lack of stability in the middle of their defensive has created significant problems for Liverpool. The Reds are in jeopardy of being knocked out of the Champions League and not finish in the Premier League top four. Jurgen Klopp will likely bring Thiago back into the starting XI, after having him come off of the bench in the first leg. Thiago is among the best midfielders in the world and should help turn the tide in favor of the Reds in midfield.
Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 over the weekend to move within one point of Atletico Madrid in the title race. Manager Zinedine Zidane’s team controlled the middle of the field with Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, and Casemiro. The trio will try to replicate their performance in the second leg. Real will again be vulnerable defensively. Center-backs Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane have been ruled out. While right-back Dani Carvajal is questionable with a hamstring injury. Upfront, Karim Benzema will lead the line. Benzema is having another great season, scoring 25 goals and adding eight assists. The French striker will look to take advantage of Liverpool’s defensive weaknesses.
