April 15 is a special day in baseball history. On this very day in 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in MLB by making his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Since 2004, teams honor Robinson’s legacy every April 15 and 16 (depending on if a team is on an off-day) with Jackie Robinson Day. Since 2009, all players and managers wear the No. 42 in honor of Robinson.

On Thursday, the New York Mets were scheduled to play against the Philadelphia Phillies for Jackie Robinson Day, but the game was postponed due to rain. Prior to the game, Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman honored Robinson by revealing an incredible tattoo of the baseball legend at the start of the day.

Stroman unveiled this very tattoo last year on Jackie Robinson Day, where he thanked the baseball legend who “paved the way for African Americans to play the sport I love.”

Robinson spent the entirety of his MLB career with the Dodgers since making his debut in 1947. Through 10 years, Robinson recorded a cumulative .311 batting average and .883 OPS, while recording 137 home runs, 734 RBI, 947 runs scored and 1,518 hits. The six-time All-Star won the Rookie of the Year award in 1947, the NL MVP Award in 1949 and the 1955 World Series. In 1962, Robinson was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first time on the ballot.

Stroman is off to a tremendous start to his 2021 season. Through three starts, Stroman has recorded a 2-0 overall record, 0.73 ERA, a 0.81 WHIP and six strikeouts through 12.1 innings of work.
