Browns: Jadeveon Clowney reveals the reason he signed with Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns are on the rise and now has three of the last seven first overall picks on its very talented roster. 

In 2000, The Coors released the song “Breathless.” In 2021, the theme for the improving Cleveland Browns is “relentless.”

On Wednesday, the club signed seven-year pro Jadeveon Clowney to a one-year contract to a defensive unit that has been bolstering its talent during free agency. It was apparently a long time coming in regard to adding the three-time Pro Bowl defender.

Camryn Justice of News 5 Cleveland explained the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft liked Browns’ general manager executive vice president of football operations/general manager Andrew Berry relentless approach in getting him signed.

And that appeared to be a common choice of words in this acquisition if you listen to Berry (via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com):

"Jadeveon’s had a very productive career since 2014. We love his relentless style of play. … He’s one of the more disruptive players in the game and we think he’s going to add an element of ruggedness along our defensive line and will pair nicely with many of the guys we have on the roster already. The other thing we love about Jadeveon is his versatility, his ability to play all across the front and impact the game regardless of his alignment."

During this free agency period, the Browns have added seven key players – all on defense. The list includes Clowney, safety S John Johnson III, cornerback Troy Hill, linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. and defensive linemen Malik Jackson, Takkarist McKinley and Sheldon Day. Adding the versatile former Texans, Seahawks and Titans defender should make life even easier for premier edge rusher Myles Garrett. And Clowney is capable of lining up just about anywhere on coordinator Joe Woods’ front seven.

Cleveland was a playoff team this past season for the first time since 2002. The club won a postseason game for the first time since 1994. There’s been no division title since those original Browns captured the AFC Central in 1989. Defense was the team’s biggest priority this offseason and now there are a lot of new talented pieces. And perhaps soon Woods’ unit will earn the description of “relentless.”
