Texas football: Steve Sarkisian updates quarterback competition with some good and some bad news
By John Buhler
Steve Sarkisian gives us an update on how the quarterback competition is going within his Texas football program.
Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian had both good and bad things to say about the two signal-callers battling for the starting quarterback job: Hudson Card and Casey Thompson.
For the last several years, it was The Sam Ehlinger Show in Austin. With him taking his talents to the NFL, either Card or Thompson project as the Longhorns’ Week 1 starter in 2021. Given that this is Sarkisian’s first year leading Texas, it will be all about competition this spring and fall. While he liked some things out of Card and Thompson, some of his comments are a bit concerning, too.
Though Sarkisian applauded their ability to extend drives and put up points in the red zone, he wants his quarterbacks to cut down on the negative plays.
If Texas wants to hang with Oklahoma and Iowa State this season, whoever ends up winning the starting quarterback job cannot be inherently reckless with the football. Hopefully, these guys get it cleaned up.
Texas football: Steve Sarkisian needs his quarterbacks to improve fast
Because this is the first year of a new era of Texas football, Sarkisian and his players will have time to figure it out. Though expectations are always high for the Longhorns, this is not a year where they will contend for championships. With that in mind, it is all about setting the tone in which the Sarkisian era of Texas football will be played. When he says #AllGasNoBrakes, he really means it.
Overall, it serves Texas in so many ways to not name a starting quarterback until the tail-end of the summer at the absolute earliest. It will prevent a transfer from happening, as well as bringing out the very best in the two signal-callers. Time is on Sarkisian’s side to make the best decision for his football program when it comes to the quarterback position. Card and Thompson must step up.
Whoever takes better care of the football will likely end up being the Texas starter this season.
