According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens turned down a $70 million contract from the Indiana Hoosiers.

It’s no secret that the Indiana Hoosiers and countless boosters were dreaming of Brad Stevens taking over as the program’s head coach. One issue? He’s the head man for the Boston Celtics and loves his job. But just how much does Stevens enjoy Boston?

According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowksi, Indiana was all set to give Stevens a cool $70 million to leave the Celtics and run the show for the Hoosiers. Stevens told them thanks, but no thanks.

That is a massive chunk of change Indiana was putting on the table for Stevens, but it simply wasn’t enough to get him to leave his current role. Stevens, of course, gained so much popularity after the incredible job he did coaching the Butler Bulldogs. Boston gave him his shot in the pros, and he hasn’t looked back since.

While Indiana is one of the most prestigious college basketball programs in the country, Stevens clearly loves the Celtics and isn’t ready to go back to the college level — even for the team of his home state. That would certainly explain why $70 million didn’t send things over the top for Indiana in pursuing him.

While Stevens hasn’t led the Celtics to an NBA Finals title yet, this is a loaded team with plenty of potential each season. As things currently stand, Boston is 31-26 and in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings.

Later this year, they’ll look to make plenty of noise in the postseason and maybe do enough to get to the Finals. If they do so, Stevens will be on the bench for the team where he knows he belongs. If not … well, even after signing another extension with the Celtics last year, passing up on $70 million may come back to haunt him depending on what his long-term future holds in Boston.
