Scott Wedgewood gives up the weakest goal of all-time to Penguins (Video)

There’s weak, and then there’s the goal that the New Jersey Devils just gave up to the Pittsburgh Penguins. 

This season has been a non-stop nightmare for the New Jersey Devils. According to Money Puck, they have a 0% chance of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs. For the ninth time in the last 10 seasons, the Devils will not be making the playoffs. Tuesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins featured what might be the lowest point of the Devils’ terrible, horrible, no good, very bad 2020-21 season.

Already down 2-0 to Pittsburgh, the Devils were trying to get back into the game. But just 45 seconds after Bryan Rust scored the Pens’ second goal, defenseman Brian Dumoulin scored from nearly center ice.

It might be the worst goal the Devils, or any NHL team for that matter, has ever allowed. Scott Wedgewood has no excuses for letting this one in, especially with his team already trailing 2-0.

Brian Dumoulin’s goal belongs in pee wee hockey, not the NHL

Dumoulin isn’t exactly a goal scorer either. This was just his third goal of the season, and though he is quite underrated as a defensive defenseman, his career high in goals is five. In 377 regular season games, he has just 13 goals. On Dumoulin’s goal, goaltender Tristan Jarry also picked up his third assist of the season and his first primary assist.

Wedgewood’s night ended after the first period, with Aaron Dell replacing him in net. After the goal he allowed to Dumoulin, it’s hard to blame the Devils for taking him out.

The Penguins are making a push for the postseason and they’re not out of the race for the top spot in the MassMutual East Division. With 59 points, they’re just one point back of the New York Islanders for second place and merely three points back of the Washington Capitals, who currently lead the division. The Pens are hoping to make a run in the postseason and are seeking their fourth Stanley Cup with Sidney Crosby as their captain.
