3 moves Pittsburgh Steelers need to make during the NFL Draft
2. Replace James Conner
The departures came on both sides of the ball this offseason. James Conner waited and waited and ended up signing a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals. He was clearly out of Pittsburgh’s long-term plans.
Conner struggled to stay healthy during his time in Pittsburgh so it is no surprise the team moved on. However, there is a severe lack of depth at the position right now.
Benny Snell and Anthony McFarland remain as the top two players in the backfield for the Steelers. Both are very young and neither has proven to be all that dominant. Hence why Conner still managed to lead the team in rushing with only 721 yards last season.
The Steelers should not take a running back in the first round. That is not usually a fantastic plan, especially for a team looking to save money at that position. However, the team does have two fourth-round picks and could even use a third-rounder on a running back.
It would be a shock if the Steelers ignored the position completely given the current youth in the backfield on the roster. Making Roethlisberger throw the ball 50 times per game would not be an amazing strategy given his age and history of injuries.
