Before Alabama, DeVonta Smith was making DB’s look stupid in high school too

Alabama football Heisman winner DeVonta Smith had a penchant for big plays even before he got to college as demolished DBs in high school in Louisiana.

Don’t worry SEC defensive backs, DeVonta Smith had it out for defenders long before he made you look silly.

If some of the best players in college football couldn’t slow Smith down, how do you think high school DBs fared?

You don’t have to guess. Just watch Smith’s impressive high school tape:

Smith just looks bigger and faster than everyone on the field in that video. It takes a whole defense to bring him down. Even when the cornerback is in good position, Smith would still win the battle thanks to his ball skills and body control.

No wonder Smith ranked as a four-star in the class of 2017, ranking No. 62 nationally in the 247Sports composite. The folks at 247 knew something other evaluators didn’t though. They rated him as a five-star at No. 29 in the country in their individual rankings.

DeVonta Smith turned his high school success into college glory

Even as you watch that tape, it would be a surprise to learn Smith would go on to win the Heisman Trophy. There are thousands of jaw-dropping high school wide receivers who barely do anything in college, let alone take home the award as the best player in the game.

It’s not that he wasn’t talented enough. Clearly, he’s been able to dominate the game at every level. Wide receivers just don’t win that kind of award very often. Smith’s 2020 season is all the more impressive because of it.

We’ll have to see if Smith can have the same impact when he gets to the NFL. He’s projected as a high first-round pick.
