Kyle Pitts’ high school coach said he’d never be a tight end. The lie detector determined that was a lie

One high school coach actually thought Kyle Pitts could never play the tight end position well.

Slated to be the highest tight end ever taken in an NFL Draft, the Florida Gators’ John Mackey winner Kyle Pitts reflected on the one high school coach who said he could never play the position.

Pitts was initially groomed to be a high school quarterback because of his lanky physique. After hardly playing at all during his freshman season of high school and not doing so well during his sophomore campaign, Pitts suggested a position switch.

“I didn’t really like it at all,” said Pitts to the Palm Beach Post. “I asked them could I like try to go tight end. He said, ‘OK, well, get in a three-point stance.’ I did that and then he said, ‘You’ll never make it.’ So that’s when I came here, and I’m showing now that I can make it at tight end.

I always think about it. That’s just like a chip on my shoulder, him saying that. That’s just something I always remember in the back of my head.”

Pitts ended up transferring ahead of his junior year in high school. He worked at the new position and eventually became a blue-chip prospect as a tight end. Pitts went on to do amazing things in Florida uniform. He projects as a top-six pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Pitts could go as high as the Atlanta Falcons picking at No. 4. There is no way he gets past the Miami Dolphins picking at No. 6.

The last tight end who was this highly touted coming out of college was Vernon Davis. The former Maryland star went on to have a long and successful NFL career with multiple franchises. He went No. 6 overall to the San Francisco 49ers in his NFL Draft. If Pitts goes as high as No. 5 to the Cincinnati Bengals, he will be the highest-drafted tight end prospect of all time.

When Pitts was out there catching every ball under the sun for Dan Mullen, we all had to wonder where Pitts gets his passion from playing the tight end position. Being told “no” is a very strong motivator. By playing with a boulder-sized chip on his shoulder, Pitts has the chance to become the next superstar tight end in the NFL. He is probably the safest pick to make in this draft, too.

The next time somebody tells says you cannot do something, think about Pitts playing tight end.
