Patrick Mahomes’ high school basketball highlights tease NBA potential (Video)

Before he was winning an MVP and Super Bowl in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs, Patrick Mahomes could have had a future as a college basketball player.

There’s no denying the talent dripping out of Patrick Mahomes.

The best quarterback to come into the NFL in a long time is on track to be a Hall of Famer five years after he retires, but he potentially could have had a professional career in at least two other sports.

Mahomes was a high school baseball star and played briefly at Texas Tech before transitioning to football, which was a smart decision. But in high school, Mahomes was a talented hooper who could do a little bit of everything on the hardcourt.

“He could do a lot,” Mahomes’ basketball coach his senior year, Brent Kelley told FanSided. “He could play any position. We would post him up a lot ’cause he was so good at controlling his body. If he caught the ball in the post, he was gonna score or he was gonna go to the free throw line ’cause he was so smart. We ran him off some screens. And then late in the games, we would put him at the point guard position just ’cause he was a big kid and was smart and could handle the ball too. He did a little bit of everything.”

Just check out the highlight film of Mahomes dunking, dropping dimes and hitting shots like he was a five-star basketball recruit with Duke and Kentucky fighting over him.

It’s really unfair for one person to be so talented, but when you consider this is the third sport for Mahomes and he was so good despite just playing it between football and baseball seasons, and it’s ridiculous to think what could have been if he decided to play it full time.

“I definitely think he would’ve been a college basketball player,” Kelley said. “As far as the NBA, I’m not sure about that just because of his size. There’s not a lot of 6-foot-3 guards in the NBA, but I mean, I wouldn’t count him out just ’cause he would’ve worked his butt off to get there.”

Chiefs fans are happy he decided to stick with football. I’m sure Mahomes is too after signing a contract that’ll pay him nearly half a billion over the next decade.
