49ers cash in on Raiders mistake and add to defensive line

The San Francisco 49ers have been busy this week adding defensive lineman, which includes signing defensive tackle Maurice Hurst on Thursday. 

Some major moves are being made by the San Francisco 49ers leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft. Earlier in the week, the team went out and signed veteran defensive end Arden Key to a new deal. How have they followed that up?

On Thursday night, it was announced that general manager John Lynch was also able to get things done with former Las Vegas Raiders defensive tackle Maurice Hurst. The three-year lineman is all set to head to the Bay Area.

Former Las Vegas Raiders defensive tackle Maurice Hurst is headed to the 49ers

Out of Michigan, Hurst joined the Raiders back in 2018 and went on to appear in 40 games for the Raiders. This past season, the 6-2, 290-pounder played in 11 games, making three starts, and finished the campaign with 27 total tackles and 0.5 sacks.

For his career, the young defensive lineman has 76 tackles and eight sacks to his name. After three years with the Raiders, he’s now all set for the next chapter of his career with the 49ers. For San Francisco, the defensive line has clearly been a focus of late, but that will surely change come next week in the draft.

After trading up to land the No. 3 overall pick, San Francisco figures to be locked in to select a quarterback at the spot. Will it be Justin Fields or Mac Jones? That’s the question everyone has on their minds right now.

Lynch sure has a tough decision to make, as he and Kyle Shanahan are looking for a quarterback of the future to take over for Jimmy Garoppolo. Leading up to the draft, though, Lynch has done a fine job of adding playmakers for his defense.
