Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tom Brady is showing his age by complaining about the new NFL number rule, which will allow more choices for players at most positions.

Leave it to old man Tom Brady to be the only one who hates the new NFL number rule.

After the NFL owners passed the rule to loosen restrictions on which players could wear what numbers, Brady gave his opinion on Instagram.

“Good luck trying to block the right people now,” Brady wrote. “Going to make for a lot of bad football.”

The Buccaneers quarterback can complain all he wants. It’s clear he’s making a stink over nothing in this case.

Will the rule change make it slightly harder on offensive linemen? Maybe. If they were able to identify linebackers and defensive backs by the difference in their numbers in the past, they won’t be able to rely on that method any longer.

Tom Brady is just a killjoy on the new NFL number rule

That seems a rather flimsy argument against the rule change, which has come around in part because of expanded practice squads and the scarcity of numbers as a result.

If a professional offensive lineman can’t figure out how to identify a particular player because their number is now 5 rather than 55, that’s on him.

In college, linebackers can wear whatever number they like. Even defensive linemen can wear single digits. It doesn’t seem to cause problems at that level. Certainly, NFL offensive linemen will be able to figure things out.

The offense already has tons of advantages over the defense anyways. This is hardly going to result in offenses tripping over themselves in 2021.

Whatever problems Brady thinks will arise from this will be minor at worst. He doesn’t need to worry about this sabotaging future trips to Disney World.

Rather than setting the sport back, this decision frees players to wear the numbers they want. That’s a good thing.
