Former Super Bowl champion with the Chicago Bears Steve McMichael is battling ALS.

Friday brings tough news for Chicago Bears fans, as legendary defensive tackle Steve McMichael has revealed his diagnosis with ALS as reported by Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune.

McMichael spent the bulk of his NFL career out of Texas in Bears uniform. He was a two-time Pro Bowler in Chicago and a five-time All-Pro with the Bears. McMichael was an integral part of the Bears’ 1985 Super Bowl team. Affectionately known as “Mongo”, McMichael was one of the many unforgettable characters that made this era of Bears football so special.

McMichael has set up a GoFundMe for Team Mongo, as well as shirts you can buy to support him.

Though McMichael also played briefly for the New England Patriots and the Green Bay Packers in his decade-plus NFL career, he is synonymous with the Buddy Ryan 46 defense and Mike Ditka-era Bears. Surrounded by other elite defensive players, this was arguably the most dominating single-season team in the history of the NFL. One of the most underrated players of his era, McMichael had 95 sacks, 13 forced fumbles and 17 fumble recoveries in his career.

McMichael is a College Football Hall of Famer and also spent some time as a professional wrestler in the WWE when his NFL career was over. McMichael also coached the Chicago Slaughter in the Continental Indoor Football League. McMichael kept busy on the Chicago radio airwaves with pre and post-game coverage on ESPN Radio.

However, he will always be best associated with being one of the Four Horsemen along the defensive line of that absolutely incredible 1985 Bears defense.

Be sure to support Team Mongo by donating to his GoFundMe and purchasing Team Mongo shirts.
