3 unbelievable Jacob deGrom stats that prove he’s MVP of April
By Mark Powell
It’s early, but the National League MVP race goes through Jacob deGrom.
deGrom is doing a little bit of everything. With the New York Mets offense struggling, deGrom helped himself at the plate, driving in a run (his second RBI of the season). The Mets have given deGrom virtually no run support so far this season, so the ace has very little room for error. On the mound, deGrom is absolutely dominating, leaving little doubt that he’s the best pitcher in all of baseball. Against the Nationals on Friday night deGrom had 15 strikeouts, victimizing ten different Washington hitters.
But the numbers don’t end there. deGrom has fifty strikeouts across his first four starts. That’s the most to begin a season in MLB history, as he passed Randy Johnson on Friday night.
Mets: Three more stats prove Jacob deGrom is the MVP so far
By driving in another run and notching five or more base hits, deGrom becomes just the second pitcher in the modern error to record 50+ strikeouts and have five or more hits over any four-start span (not just to begin a season). The other was former Met great Doc Gooden.
deGrom’s batting average is over .500 while his ERA is .30 at the moment. Who needs Shohei Ohtani? At the end of Friday’s action, deGrom has more hits, RBIs and runs scored than runs allowed.
The 32-year-old has six hits, which is the most by any pitcher (non two-way player). No other pitcher has more than two hits. He’s the first New York Mets pitcher to register a five-game hit streak since Mike Hampton in 2000.

The Mets were projected to win 96 games per PECOTA before the season started, and while reaching that pinnacle won’t be easy, they certainly have an ace capable to carrying them when times are tough.
