2. How quickly can Heupel get his offense going?

There’s a high chance of rain on Saturday, so the fans who trudge out to Neyland Stadium will want a show to make it worth their while. Heupel needs to deliver.

His offense at UCF averaged more than 40 points per game in each of his three seasons there. Obviously, scoring is a much more difficult task in the SEC, but Heupel was hired to bring some pizazz to the Volunteer offense nonetheless. Tennessee hasn’t averaged more than 25 points per game since 2016.

The transition is still very early, but this is the time for Heupel and company to prove they at least have the fundamentals in place.

1. Who is left on defense?

Heupel’s offense will be under extra pressure because there is little reason to expect much resistance from the Tennessee defense at this point.

Thirteen defenders entered the transfer portal this offseason, leaving the Volunteers thin across the lineup.

The departure of starting linebackers Henry To’o To’o, Quavaris Crouch and Deandre Johnson left the linebacker corps particularly devastated.

The silver lining is an opening for the likes of Tyler Baron to surge into the starting lineup. At defensive back, Warren Burrell, Alontae Taylor and Tamarion McDonald could become big figures.

The defensive will continue to transform as the offseason progresses. For now, the hope is for overlooked players to shine.
