Jimbo Fisher’s Texas A&M football team will hold its annual spring game on Saturday and this is why Aggies fans need to be paying attention to.

The Texas A&M football program is coming off a phenomenal 2020 season under head coach Jimbo Fisher.

Texas A&M only lost one game a season ago. Unfortunately, that was to division rival and eventual national champion Alabama. The Aggies were the first team out in the final College Football Playoff rankings.

While that may have stung for a while, Fisher has the Aggies ready to compete for SEC championships and playoff berths in the 2020s. Their annual spring game is on Saturday.

What to watch for in Texas A&M’s spring game

3. Who fills the void of Buddy Johnson?

With linebacker Buddy Johnson turning pro, the Aggies need to find a way to replace their leading tackler from the last two seasons on defense. A pair of guys to keep an eye on in this spring game are Chris Russell Jr. and Andre White Jr. If Texas A&M wants to holds its own vs. Alabama, the Aggies need to be sound on defense. Hopefully, Russell and White can fill the void of Johnson.

2. Can Devon Achane become the perfect complementary back to Isaiah Spiller?

It has been established that Texas A&M has arguably the best back in the SEC in Isaiah Spiller. He is one of the reasons to be very high on this year’s Aggies team. What is important is if he can get some more support in the backfield. Devon Achane showed great promise at times last year and in the Aggies’ Orange Bowl win over the North Carolina Tar Heels. If he is ready, then good luck, SEC.

1. Does a leader emerge to replace Kellen Mond undated quarterback?

Replacing Kellen Mond as the starting quarterback will be the most important thing the Aggies have to figure out this spring. While it is a three-man competition between Zach Calzada, Haynes King and Eli Stowers, it feels like it will come down to either Calzada or King. Though King might hold the slightest of leads right now, how these three play in the spring game will go a long way.

Overall, the Aggies lose a bit of star power to the NFL Draft, but retain more than enough to be one of the best teams in the SEC. Fisher is a former national championship-winning coach, but his 2013 title at Florida State was nearly a decade ago.

While Texas A&M should be New Year’s Six-caliber once again, replacing Johnson and Mond will be crucial in contending for a national title.

Fisher has the Aggies program humming  and their spring game will answer some big questions.
