Braves should be embarrassed by doubleheader effort against Diamondbacks

The Atlanta Braves put up a putrid effort in a Sunday doubleheader against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Atlanta Braves were supposed to face the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday, but that was postponed due to inclement weather. So, both squads had to play in a doubleheader on Sunday. The Braves entered the two-game set on a two-game winning streak, where they scored nine total runs on 12 hits.

As it turns out, the Braves’ bats failed to show up through both contests.

The Braves fell to the Diamondbacks 5-0 in the first seven-inning contest and 7-0 in the final game of the day, where they were no-hit by struggling pitcher Madison Bumgarner through seven-innings. All in all, the Braves had a grand total of one hit in 14 innings played on the day!

Braves: Atlanta only puts up one hit in Sunday doubleheader vs Diamondbacks

The player who holds the grand distinction of having Atlanta’s only hit of the game is first baseman Freddie Freeman, who recorded a single off pitcher Zac Gallen in the bottom of the sixth inning. That actually ended Gallen’s no-hit bid! Congratulations!

In the second act of the day, the Braves could not record a single hit off Bumgarner, who entered Sunday’s second contest with an 8.68 ERA, where he surrendered a league-high 18 earned runs in 18.2 innings pitched (four starts). Bumgarner struck out seven Atlanta players and the only player to reach base was second baseman Ozzie Albies, who reached on a throwing error by Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed.

Things only get worse from here, Braves fans.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Braves’ one hit is the fewest recorded by a team in a doubleheader in MLB history. The previous record holders were the Cleveland Indians, who recorded two hits against the Boston Red Sox back in 1992.

The Braves still have 141 games to turn things around, but this effort on Sunday is glaring. Atlanta will look to put this poor showing behind them on Monday night, when they face off against the Chicago Cubs.
