5 college football superstars who will be NFL Draft steals
By John Buhler
Kyle Trask will be a better pro than some quarterbacks picked ahead of him
While there is an extreme outside chance he could make it six quarterbacks taken in the first round, Kyle Trask will be the sixth quarterback taken this year, probably in the first 10 picks on day two. The Heisman Trophy finalist was the best quarterback to play at Florida since Tim Tebow and the best pro prospect since Rex Grossman.
Sure, you can say he was coached up by Dan Mullen, as well as propped up by excellent receiving talents in generational tight end prospect Kyle Pitts and All-SEC wide receiver Kadarius Toney. However, Trask has the potential to become a franchise quarterback in this league. He needs to hold a clipboard for a year or two, but he could work if taken by the right organization.
Two teams to keep an eye on potentially drafting him are the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He could be the heir apparent to Ben Roethlisberger in the Steel City, as well as the Buccaneers’ succession plan for when Tom Brady completes his lifelong battle vs. time. There is a good chance he will be a better pro than at least two of the quarterbacks picked ahead of him.
Chuba Hubbard has the potential to be the best running back in the draft
If there are two running backs poised to go in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, they are Travis Etienne of the Clemson Tigers and Najee Harris of the Alabama Crimson Tide. Etienne would have been a first-round pick last spring had he left school a year early. With Harris also returning to school for his senior season, his draft stock did benefit a bit, as he might be pushing for the top 32.
One running back whose stock dropped a tad was former Oklahoma State star Chuba Hubbard. He and Etienne were seen as the two best running backs in the Power 5 heading into last season. While the Pokes got off to a hot start in the Big 12, Mike Gundy’s team faded down the stretch. Breece Hall and Iowa State surged as the weather turned, while Hubbard decided to opt out.
Simply put, the gap between Hubbard and the perceived top two running backs in this draft is insignificant. Had he have opted out before the start of the season, Hubbard would be right there with them potentially cracking the top 32. Hubbard was a phenomenal running back for the Cowboys. Whatever team drafts him in day two will be getting themselves a potential Pro Bowler.
Overall, there will be more than just these five former college football stars who could end up becoming draft-day steals. Naturally, there is a chance any, or all, of these day-two prospects could end up busting. The NFL Draft is a total crapshoot, as there are very few can’t-miss prospects these days. What is important to know is that greater value always found on day two.
What other college football stars do you think have the chance to become draft-day steals?
