Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews scores goal of the year (Video)
The goal of the 2020-21 season has just been scored by Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are about to be crowned Kings of the Scotia North Division. Pending the result of their Wednesday night game against the Montreal Canadiens, they could clinch a playoff spot and be the first team in the division to do so.
Appropriately, the Kings of the North are likely going to have the goal scoring king – Auston Matthews. Matthews entered Wednesday’s game with a league high 34 goals. Against the Canadiens, Matthews scored his 35th goal.
His 35th goal might be his most impressive one not just of the season, but also of his young career.
Could this be Goal of the year for Auston Matthews?
That’s just an insane goal. Matthews shows off his incredible hand-eye coordination and quick release with this beauty. How many players can knock a puck down and shoot it into the net in one fluid motion? Very, very few.
Matthews goal put the Leafs up 2-0 against the Canadiens, who are struggling to hang onto the fourth spot in the Scotia North Division. Five of Matthews’ goals have come against the Canadiens in seven games, though the seventh game isn’t finished yet. With that goal, the Leafs superstar now has at least five goals against each North opponent. The Ottawa Senators have been his most common victim, as he has nine goals in eight games against them.
Credit Matthews for doing what many have tried to do, but many of failed to do – completely unseat Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals from the goal scoring throne. While the 2020-21 season isn’t a full one, that doesn’t diminish Matthews’ impressive accomplishment. He’s off to a heck of a start to his career and it’s likely fans still haven’t seen his best days on the ice. That should scare every team in the NHL.
