Anthony Davis has a bleak response to another Lakers’ loss

Anthony Davis is back in the Los Angeles Lakers’ lineup but the team is still losing and things are looking increasingly dire.

Early this season it looked like the Los Angeles Lakers might steamroll their way through a title defense, just like they did on their way to last year’s championship. At one point in mid-February, they were 21-6, outscoring opponents by an average of 7.9 points per 100 possessions. Then Anthony Davis went down with a lower leg injury, followed soon after by LeBron James.

The extended absences of both players put pressure on the rest of the roster and put a serious dent in their record. Davis is back in the lineup and LeBron’s return is on the horizon but last night’s loss to the Washington Wizards puts the Lakers at 36-26. Hosting a first-round series is essentially off the table at this point and the Lakers need to keep winning just to avoid falling into the play-in tournament for the final two seeds in the West.

After last night’s loss, Anthony Davis was very frank speaking with the media, explaining just how delicate a situation the team is in.

The Lakers have 10 games left on their schedule and there won’t be many easy wins. Games against the Nuggets, Clippers, Trail Blazers, Suns and Knicks are all waiting for them and they finish with their final two games on the road.

There also aren’t any easy answers coming. Davis is still working his way back into shape and has shot just 39.1 percent in the four games (all losses) since returning to the lineup. James’ return is imminent but it seems fair to expect a similar adjustment period for him. He is a physical outlier but hasn’t played since March 20. Honestly, even a sense of desperation may not be enough to keep the Lakers out of the play-in tournament at this point.
