Dallas Cowboys got absolutely screwed with run on cornerbacks
By Nick Villano
A run of cornerbacks completely changed the draft strategy for the Dallas Cowboys.
The Dallas Cowboys were forced to settle for what was left in the NFL Draft on Thursday night. Just about every mock draft going in had them either taking Patrick Surtain from Alabama or Jaycee Horn from South Carolina. They were both considered the two best secondary players in the draft, and honestly there’s quite a large dropoff after them. The Cowboys were finally going to get someone to help that desperate cornerback position under Mike McCarthy.
Well, sometimes the NFL Draft doesn’t fall the way teams hope. Horn ended up going number eight to the Carolina Panthers, and the Denver Broncos went with Surtain. This left the Cowboys with nobody really right to take on the board, so they actually traded the pick to the Philadelphia Eagles, helping someone within their division get the player they wanted.
If one of those two cornerbacks were there, there is zero chance the Cowboys make that trade. The player they want and need is right there for the taking. Unfortunately, by the time the pick came to them, those cornerbacks were gone.
Sometimes the draft is all about luck. The Cowboys got lucky last year when Ceedee Lamb fell into their lap at 16. This year, they were picking 10th, but the one position they needed to fall to them didn’t. Now, they will pick 12th in what can only be described as a consolation prize.
