New England Patriots fans should hold the phone on the thought of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo potentially returning to the team.

Jimmy Garoppolo’s time with the San Francisco 49ers really feels like it’s about to come to an end. The 49ers and John Lynch are all set to select a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday night, and Garoppolo might not even be on the roster come Sunday.

One team in particular who has been mentioned in potential trade talks were the New England Patriots. What’s this, a reunion for the veteran signal-caller with Bill Belichick? That apparently won’t be the case, though, as Ian Rapoport is reporting it’s unlikely a 49ers-Pats trade goes down.

A Jimmy Garoppolo trade to the New England Patriots seems more than unlikely

As much fun as it would be to see Garoppolo return to New England and suit up for Belichick once again, there seems to be too many moving pieces to go down for this to actually happen. Plain and simple, New England doesn’t have the kind of cap space to pay Garoppolo a big chunk of change.

While New England is no longer a likely destination, San Francisco is still working to try and move the quarterback. The latest Aaron Rodgers news from Thursday also shakes things up quite a bit for the 49ers.

They would love to try and pull off a trade with the Green Bay Packers to land the reigning MVP, but that seems up in the air as well. For now, Garoppolo is still with the 49ers and Rodgers is still the starter for Green Bay. Later this week, both of those statements may no longer still be the case.
