NFL Draft 2021: These teams already want a do-over on their first round picks
The worst pick of the first round was a lock once the Las Vegas Raiders got on the clock. Las Vegas has been a bit unorthodox since Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock took over the organization a few years ago, including last year’s notable miss in the first round with cornerback Damon Arnette.
The tandem reached again in the first round by taking Alabama’s Alex Leatherwood, a solid guard prospect who was rated by many experts with a second-round grade. The Raiders took Leatherwood in the middle of the first round at a time when there were plenty of other intriguing options available, including Christian Darrisaw, Teven Jenkins and Leatherwood’s own teammate, Landon Dickerson.
All of those options would have been better values for the Raiders, who chose to tear apart their offensive line in the offseason. That move made no sense in its own right but Las Vegas clearly had a plan to address the line in the draft.
The problem here was execution, specifically in the fact that Las Vegas chose to reach significantly for a player who may well have been on the board for them in the second round. Reaching for players leads to a thinner roster and could make life even tougher for Derek Carr than it needed to be.
