Packers reportedly have no plans to trade away Aaron Rodgers
The idea that Green Bay might trade Aaron Rodgers is an interesting thought experiment, but the Packers aren’t close to moving their superstar quarterback.
Aaron Rodgers might want to engineer a move away from the Packers, but Green Bay’s front office is in no mood to accommodate that request. Several teams are calling the team about swinging a deal for their Hall of Fame quarterback, but the Packers aren’t actively engaged in any trade discussions.
Things in the NFL can always change quickly, but according to Ian Rapoport, the Packers currently have “no plans” to deal Rodgers. That’s bad news for teams like the Broncos that originally believed they had a shot to land the dynamic passer. It’s great news for Packers fans who want to see Rodgers finish his career in the friendly confines of Lambeau Field.
It’s reasonable to think cooler heads will eventually prevail here. Rodgers clearly wants the Packers to sign him to a new lucrative contract and he hasn’t gotten an offer he deems as satisfactory from his current team. That’s the most likely explanation for the sudden “leak” that Rodgers wants a trade just before the 2021 NFL Draft prepared to begin.
The Packers front office may not want to pay Rodgers like the superstar that he’s been for years, but it’s difficult to imagine they’ll play hardball to the point where a trade becomes a realistic outcome. Jordan Love has some fans inside the organization, but asking him to replace Rodgers anytime soon could cause the young quarterback to be crushed under the weight of unrealistic expectations.
