The San Francisco 49ers lit up the social media after they selected Trey Lance with the third-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
The 2021 NFL Draft officially began at the third-overall pick, owned by the San Francisco 49ers. Over a month ago, the 49ers moved up in a massive trade with the Miami Dolphins to grab their quarterback of the future, leaving many wondering which prospect they would take. After much buzz, the fans and media finally received their answer.
On Thursday, the 49ers officially selected North Dakota State signal-caller Trey Lance with the third-overall pick. With the 49ers keeping everything tight-lipped, it came as no surprise that social media exploded following the announcement from commissioner Roger Goodell.

Twitter reacts to the San Francisco 49ers selecting quarterback Trey Lance
Ever since the trade up, all eyes were on Alabama’s Mac Jones, who reportedly had a huge fan in 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. But as the NFL Draft drew closer, Lance entered the fray alongside Jones for the third-overall pick. And as we all saw, Lance won out.
While the knock on Lance was that he played at North Dakota State, he still turned heads with his impressive play with both his arm and his legs. In his lone full season in 2019, Lance threw for 2,786 yards, 28 touchdowns and zero interceptions on a 66.9 completion percentage, while rushing for 1,110 yards and 14 scores on 169 carries.
Lance now enters a great situation in San Francisco. The young signal caller will likely sit behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo as he gets to learn Shanahan’s offense. Once ready, he will get to throw passes to the likes of George Kittle, Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. Not a bad group to throw passes to.
The suspense is over, Trey Lance is a San Francisco 49er.
