Packers afraid of Justin Fields, reach for corner in first round
The Green Bay Packers drafted cornerback Eric Stokes in the first round, clearly fearing for their defense because of new Bears quarterback Justin Fields.
The Green Bay Packers drafted a cornerback with their first-round NFL Draft pick on Thursday night, which can only mean one thing: They’re scared of the Chicago Bears‘ new quarterback, Justin Fields.
Sure, the Packers could have gotten a wide receiver to bolster Rodgers’ available receiving targets. But why break a tradition that goes back to 2002, the last time Green Bay selected a non-quarterback skill position player?
Rodgers is unhappy with the franchise, perhaps because of that particular tradition. Assuaging his anger with a shiny new receiver would have been the logical choice. The Packers don’t need logic when they can galaxy brain their pick instead.
The only conclusion must be that the Packers felt they had to address their pass defense with Chicago getting their quarterback of the future. There’s no other explanation.
Packers surprised with their first-round pick and not in a good way
But seriously, this particular selection should raise eyebrows. NFL.com gave Stokes a second-round grade. He wasn’t expected to go in the first. It’s a reach.
Ole Miss’ Elijah Moore would have made a ton of sense for Rodgers and the team.
Stokes better pan out quickly if they want to save face, and they better find value at wide receiver with their second-round pick.
