Are Texans preparing to move on from Deshaun Watson with Davis Mills?
By Scott Rogust
Did the Houston Texans select Stanford’s Davis Mills just in case they decide to move on from quarterback Deshaun Watson?
The Houston Texans were essentially not clocked in for the first two rounds of the 2021 NFL Draft due to them trading both picks to the Miami Dolphins in the Laremy Tunsil deal. The Texans finally were on the clock with the No. 67 pick in the Nick Caserio-David Culley era in Houston. The pick came as a shock to many.
At the start of the third-round, the Texans selected Stanford quarterback Davis Mills after a run on signal callers beginning at the end of the second-round. The pick of Mills did nothing but further raise questions about Deshaun Watson’s status with the Texans.
Texans: Davis Mills joins Houston’s uncertain quarterback situation
There has been nothing but drama in Houston in regards to Watson. This offseason, the relationship between the Texans and Watson had soured to the point where the quarterback demanded a trade off the team. While the team did deny their intent on trading Watson, trade talk and rumors have halted due to the allegations of sexual assault and harassment made by over 20 women.
NFL Media’s Daniel Jeremiah noted during the NFL Draft broadcast that everyone in the league expects that Watson has played his final snap with the Texans. Hence the selection of Mills, who is all but officially slated to be Houston’s quarterback of the future.
Through three seasons with Stanford, Mills only played in 14 games. In those contests, Mills completed 65.5-percent of his passes for 3,468 yards, 18 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Even if the Texans move on from Watson, Mills won’t be immediately thrown to the proverbial wolves. The team did sign veteran Tyrod Taylor this offseason, who has become the ultimate bridge quarterback in the NFL. If Watson’s time in Houston has come to an end, Taylor will get the start under center in 2021.
As if you needed further hints that Watson’s time in Houston is over, you received a sign with the selection of Mills in the third-round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
