The Kansas City Chiefs get Patrick Mahomes another weapon in former Clemson football standout Cornell Powell.

By drafting Clemson football star Cornell Powell with the No. 181 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs have procured yet another weapon for quarterback Patrick Mahomes to play with.

Powell was one of the Clemson receivers that had to rise to the occasion with Tee Higgins turning pro a year ago, as well as top returning receiver Justyn Ross having to miss the entire 2020 college football season with a serious neck injury. He becomes the second Clemson receiver drafted this year after Amari Rodgers went to the Green Bay Packers in the third round on Friday night.

Why do teams like the Chiefs always end up getting one steal after another in the NFL Draft?

The Chiefs did not address the wide receiver position with either of they day-two picks on Friday night. General manager Brett Veach opted to get tremendous value with Missouri linebacker Nick Bolton and Oklahoma center Creed Humphrey at picks No. 58 and No. 63, respectively. Though Veach took two more players ahead of Powell on Saturday, Mahomes has to love this selection.

Powell may end up replacing fellow Clemson legend Sammy Watkins in the Chiefs’ receiving corps. Though Watkins was a former first-round pick out of Clemson many years ago, he is really only a gadget player at this point of his career. While Powell’s role may not be a big one in the deep Chiefs receiving corps, you better believe Andy Reid will find one for him here fast. Powell can play.

Look for the Mahomes-to-Powell connection to grow as the 2021 NFL season further develops.
