Former Denver Broncos starting quarterback Jake Plummer wants “true fans” to believe in quarterback Drew Lock.

The Denver Broncos entered the 2021 NFL Draft with a well-built roster, with the only real question mark coming at the quarterback position. After showing promise in the latter portion of the 2019 season, Drew Lock struggled in his first official campaign as Broncos starting quarterback last year. At the conclusion of the 2021 NFL Draft, the Broncos walked away without a single passer.

While some fans are not sold on Lock, former Broncos starting quarterback Jake Plummer banged on the table for the third-year signal caller. During an appearance on the “Nick and Cecil Show” on 104.3 The Fan, Plummer implored on “true fans” to believe in Lock this season.

“I think bringing in a quarterback at this point, with Drew Lock here already, the fans were mad but why? They could be mad again when Justin Fields takes two years to be a good quarterback and they get two more years of development to try to get to the big game,” Plummer said, via SI.com. “I still believe Drew Lock has it. I still believe that if you really want to be a true Bronco fan, you buy into the guys that here right now and you try to send them the love they that need and deserve as your guy.”

Lock shined during his five games starting under center during his rookie season, where he completed 64.1-percent of his passes for 1,020 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. That had plenty of Broncos fans buying into the former 2019 second-round pick out of Missouri.

In 2020, Lock took a step back in his development, as he threw a league-high 15 interceptions in 13 starts. Along with that, Lock threw for 2,933 yards and 16 touchdowns on a 57.3 completion percentage.

This offseason, the Broncos hired a new general manager in George Paton, who said that while he likes Lock, he would like to have a competition at quarterback heading into the campaign. Paton accomplished that goal by acquiring Teddy Bridgewater from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a 2021 sixth-round draft pick. Paton does have a connection with Bridgewater, as he was the assistant general manager of the Minnesota Vikings when the team drafted the quarterback out of Louisville in the first-round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

Lock has the chance to prove the doubters wrong with a strong preseason that carries over into the 2021 season. Plummer is buying into Lock, and says that all the true Broncos fans should do the same.
