Kansas City Chiefs cut TE who wanted to be paid in Bitcoin

Sean Culkin, who wanted to convert 100 percent of his salary into Bitcoin, was released by the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday.
This offseason, the Kansas City Chiefs signed a multitude of players in hopes of improving their roster heading into the 2021 regular season. One of their first signings was former Los Angeles Chargers and Baltimore Ravens tight end Sean Culkin, who made waves for wanting to convert his entire salary to Bitcoin if he were to make the roster. Unfortunately for Culkin, his stint in Kansas City ended before it even started.
On Monday, the Chiefs released Culkin from his contract. Additionally, the team released offensive lineman Bryan Witzmann and waived quarterback Jordan Ta’amu, per the team’s official transaction wire.
Chiefs: Sean Culkin released by Kansas City on Monday
Back in February, Culkin signed a one-year deal worth $920,000. Upon signing with the team, Culkin had a shot to win the backup tight end spot behind star Travis Kelce. But then, Chiefs general manager Brett Veach made a plethora of moves after releasing Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz while also restructuring the contracts of Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones and Kelce.
Prior to the NFL Draft, the Chiefs signed former Dallas Cowboys tight end Blake Bell to a one-year, $1.1 million contract. The tight end depth chart grew further after the Chiefs decided to trade up in the fifth round in the NFL Draft to select Duke tight end Noah Gray. Add that to the team also having Nick Keizer and Evan Baylis on the positional depth chart, and that virtually spelled the end of Culkin’s time in Kansas City.
Through his four years in the NFL, Culkin caught two passes for 36 yards on three targets in 19 games.
Cullen will now look to sign on with a team ahead of training camp this summer.
